MixClub ’22
On this page you find mixes and masters that were made as part of the MixClub ’22 training initiative. See [here] for more information. MixClub ’22 is a group of (semi) professional mixing/mastering engineers who make a mix and master every few months. We impose the challenge to produce the mix and master within a very limited time span. Consequently, most of these mixes are open for further improvement. We provide feedback on each others results and, based on this feedback, an improved mix/master is produced. Below you find the final versions of the mixes and masters that I made. Additional songs will be added as we go.

MixClub-22 session 7: April 2024

These multitracks were kindly provided by TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik. This song was recorded as part of the LIVE FROM THE LAB live music video series that is recorded and filmed at TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik’s facility in South Windsor, CT. Each session is tracked live exclusively with TELEFUNKEN microphones and features unique performances from a variety of local, regional, national, and international artists and ensembles. The multitrack audio files from these sessions are available for free. This mix was quite challenging because the timing and pitch of the bass player required a lot of editing. I converted the bass audio track to MIDI, and largely changed it. Also did some editing using Melodyne to improve the vocals. I have also added a drum track (many thanks to Glenn Welmann, UK). The mix is open for improvement but after all the editing work, I didn’t want to spend more time on it.

The Band
Arise is a Canadian roots reggae band comprising Paul Wagorn (bass, keys), Tom Charles (drums), and Hayden Johnson (vocals). Although normally a five-piece group, they were a member short when this song was recorded, and their guitarist on this song, Jordie Edmonds, has also since left the line-up. Paul arranged and recorded the production himself in his own home studio.

The Band
Fresh, innovative indie swing from Vienna. Originally a three-piece and now a quartet, Marina & The Kats has been one of the most exciting and trailblazing bands in Austria (if not Europe) for years, as anyone who has ever had the chance to catch one of their many high-octane shows will confirm. No fewer than three of the four band members play drums. “Joint drum duties doesn’t make life easy,” the band admits, “but it makes for an immense listening experience.” – and that’s the Marina & The Kats trademark: a totally independent sound that grabs the songs by the scruff of the neck and ensures that no one will be leaving the venue without their groove on.

MixClub-22 session 2: February 2023
Artist: Curly Castro
Song: Born Ready
Style: Rap

The Song
The song’s title ‘Born Ready’, is the nickname of NBA star Lance Stephenson. Castro’s lyrics pay homage to Lance and legendary street ballers, including Pat the Roc, to create a motivational rap mantra. The song is driven forward by beats and an arpeggiated synth sample that are all taken from the MEGA bundle exclusive, MEGA Sampler. The song also features synth sounds created with the Unfiltered Audio Lion plugin.
The Artist
Curly Castro is a son of all three lands: West Indies, Brooklyn and West Philly, channeling all of them on his latest album Little Robert Hutton: an LP inspired by equal parts George Orwell, Spike Lee, and MF Doom, featuring Island riddims that collide with Gotham drums. His music has been described as activism for rebels who outlived the Deceptions of Brooklyn and the MOVE bombing of West Philly, while memorizing every word to Funcrusher Plus, Dah’ Shinin’, and Soul Revolution.
