Laney IRT60H IronHeart guitar amplifier head

The Laney IRT60H IronHeart is a tube 3-channel guitar head.

The XLR-DI out allows you to connect your amplifier to a PA system or recording interface, without the need for miking. It is fully balanced and features a level switch for -30dB (PA/Desk level) or +4dB (Line level) for driving powered cabinets directly. The XLR-DI out also features a ground lift switch is also provided for lowest noise performance. Unlike most other XLR-DI out, the Laney fitted XLR-DI out is post the output section of the amp.

The Vari-Watts control the signal level within the power amplifier, allowing it to be driven harder at lower volume levels. For full output power, running the power tubes at maximum levels, turn this control fully clockwise. To reduce output volume, turn this control to the left.

On-board studio quality reverb. Reverb gives you a sense of the space that you are in. A dry guitar signal can sound a little dull. Adding the right about of reverb provides the guitar signal with ambience and brings it to life.

Pulling on each of the EQ control knobs will shift the response of each control as follows: Bass: Deep – This extends the low-end frequency response, resulting in a fuller, heavier sound for lower notes. Mid: Shift – This lowers the frequency range of the mid control to give a tighter sound. Treble: Shift – This broadens the Treble control frequency response, to give a rounder sound to higher notes, especially when used with thin sounding pickups.

Channels

The Clean channel isn’t just good, it’s great. Lots of chime and character. With the clean volume on 3 I could get a dynamic, pristine, Voxy-style clean that had just enough “grease” to it to be really interesting. And if you kick in the clean boost around 4 you can take it into some light breakup for muscle and Voxy-style “clean dirt” if that makes sense. Don’t let the volume on 3 fool you into thinking it was quiet—clean is always louder (since it’s uncompressed by gain) so the Clean 3 volume was the same as the Rhythm/Lead volumes at 6. Really love this channel!

The Rhythm channel is the Laney take on a rodded Marshall tone, but with loads more gain on tap. With the Rhythm volume on 6, gain on 4, and boost on 4, I could get the “Brown sound” and all the great British tones (AC/DC, Zeppelin, etc), with a absolute ton more gain to go if I wanted it. This was definitely the mid-gain British sound I am looking for.

Finally, the Lead channel. This is really a nuclear beast. With the Gain at 7 and boost on 4, it’s got a gut crushing, huge, deep tone that doesn’t get muddy or wooly. And again, there’s still more gain and boost to go, I don’t believe in maxing everything out but finding a good tone and pulling back a little.

Two minor issues

  1. The foot pedal. It’s got boost and reverb switches, which is nice. And then it’s got two footswitches for the three channels, requiring a bit of dancing to get to all three. It’s made more confusing by the fact that activating the Lead channel does not deactivate the Clean channel light.
  2. The Standby switch operation is the opposite of what I expect. Standby is on when the Standby light is OFF. Standby light ON = play mode.
