Clarity M Stereo
The Clarity M Stereo from TC Electronic has a 7″ high-resolution LCD display to provide various metering options that can be used during mixing or mastering. Metering options include; the LM6 Loudness Radar Meter, a true peak meter, downmix compliance, stereo correlation, and a RTA (Real Time Analyzer).
Clarity M stereo can be used as a hardware stand-alone desktop meter but it also integrates with a DAW (e.g., Cubase) via plug-in metering (i.e., VST, AU, or AAX compatible DAWs).
In addition to its use as plugin metering, it provides several other input sources: unbalanced stereo 96 kHz AES3 digital audio on 75 Ohm BNC connectors or S/PDIF via a RCA adapter for broadcast-grade metering, and stereo optical (TOSLink). The Clarity M is fully compliant with all major broadcast standards including Loudness, K-weighted, relative to full scale (LKFS; ITU BS.1770-4), audio loudness for digital television (ATSC A/85), loudness normalization (EBU R128), maximum allowable peak level in the digital television broadcasting (TR-B32) and Measurement and Management of Loudness for TV Broadcasting (OP-59).
Applications
Vector Scope
By tracing the left and right audio waveforms into a shape-like cloud, the high precision vector scope in Clarity M stereo will help identifying important stereo balance and phase issues in your mix. The Vectorscope measures the balance of a stereo mix and is plotted on an X-Y access. If you have a stereo mix or two mono tracks that are panned center, you will see a straight vertical line. Any deviation (left or right) and you’ll see a more scattered line pointing towards the direction it’s panned.
RTA
A realtime analyzer is a professional audio device that measures and displays the frequency spectrum of an audio signal. With its 1/3 octave resolution, the high-accuracy RTA provides a solid overview of the spectral distribution of your mix. The RTA’s individual band zoom lets you pinpoint exact frequencies, even outside your hearing range, allowing problematic frequencies to be identified and adjusted as necessary.
Balance-O-Meter
Checking the spatial balance of a mix is paramount to ensure your mix has a well balanced stereo image and optimum stereo width. With the Balance-O-Meter one gets instant access to the Left to Right balance at-a-glance.
True-Peak
Based on TC Electronic’s True-Peak Technology, the Clarity M Stereo is a guard against otherwise unpredictable clipping.
Loudness Radar
The Loudness Radar is essential when it comes to monitoring the loudness of your mix. With the loudness history overview on the scope, the radar helps get the levels just right, while the momentary loudness in the outer ring keeps an eye on your instant loudness level.
Loudness Measures
Loudness statistics not only keep you compliant with loudness standards, they also provide crucial information on other important aspects of your mix, such as micro dynamics and macro dynamics.
Downmix Deviation
The Deviation meter is a fundamental tool to ensure your mix sounds great whether played back in stereo or mono. This downmix compatibility meter is based on TC Electronic’s Loudness Technology, and provides the best means for determining the status of your mix fold down.
Correlation
For stereo mixing, the correlation meter helps identify phasing issues and other anomalies that are easy to miss when relying solely on your ears.
Create Custom Folders
Presets are placed in specific folders (Broadcast, Default, Film, Music) on the device itself. However, you can also create custom folders. This is especially useful if you have custom presets for different genres. For example, you could create one folder for different rock presets, then another folder for different broadcast presets. It’s very easy to create them, too.
- Press SYS, then use the encoder to switch the USB Mode to Disk Drive.
- Connect the Clarity M to your computer. The Clarity M will now appear as a storage device.
- Within the Clarity M drive, double-click the Presets folder, create a folder and name it whatever you’d like. The folder will now appear in the Preset Library within the Clarity M.
Changing the display layout
While the presets are easy to navigate, everyone has a different workflow, so you may prefer one layout over another. The great thing with the Clarity M is that you can customize the layout however you want. TC Electronic has made it very easy as well.
When you’re in the Edit window, press LAYOUT, use the UP and DOWN arrows to select the parameter you want in that position, then use the encoder knob to place the parameter in that spot. Once you’re happy with the layout, press the EXIT button, press the LIB button, then press STORE.
