Musical Diary
Dear diary,
what did I do the last (few) days?
Saterday, 17 April 2021
Quick update about the reorganization of my studio. Takes a lot of time. But all audio is now connected. MIDI remains to be connect. Will do that tomorrow. Finally, I will have to test if everything is properly working. And need to recalibrate my speakers. Probably day of work.
Also had some problems with the Softtube Console 1 Fader. More about that later.

After a lot of hesitation I decided to reorganize my studio for several reasons: (1) I decided to remove all my outboard gear that I had stacked up in my 19-inch rack because I was hardly using it anymore since I completely mix in-the-box, (ii) I wanted to have more space for my controllers on my desk (Stream Deck XL, Big Knop, CC121, Console 1 Fader) and, consequently, (iii) I moved the Behringer X32 from my desk to the previous space of my rack.
It took me about 2 days to disconnect everything, to detangle the many cables, and to connect my computer again.
I placed the X32 on top of my 16HE rack (which is on a board with wheels) from which I removed all outboard gear. Fits perfectly, and now I can easily get behind the mixer for making all the connections. I have ordered a new 6HE rack that fits inside the 16HE rack, and in which I will reinstall the three Behringer DI800 Ultra DI’s, one Behringer PX 3000 Patchbay, the Roland A880 midi patch, and probably the Behringer Powerplay Pro XL headphone amplifier. On the patchbay I will only put six X32 output channels and the 6 aux channels (in and out). This will provide me with full flexibility of using any input/output of the X32, and also will be able to hook up, for example, the Lexicon MPX500, when needed and which I now removed from my rack (photos later).
On my desk I have now ample space for all controllers and more.
Thus, still work to do. Need to install the new rack, connect all instruments again to the X32, and connect all midi to the A880. Will also need to recalibrate my the ARC system. One advantage, though, from the new setup is that i have far less cables and got rid of all cables that ran from the rack to the X32 on my desk.

Did a lot of work on my new composition, which now finally got a title: Time to Start.
Finally update the website with Amplitube 5, Steinberg CC121, and Softube Consol 1 Fader. Also did some final bits and pieces on explaining audio metering.
….and before I forget: I found this guy:

Last couple of weeks did some more work on my new song. Not much progress since I had to look in more depth in how to use RealGuitar from MusicLab to get an acoustic guitar part the way I want. This took more time then expected but I now more or less know how to proceed with this. I have downloaded the current version of the song to SoundCloud. You hear the acoustic guitar in the intro and the first verse:
Here is a nice demo of RealGuitar:

Today a quick update of my SoundGym achievements.
My Sound Performance Index (SPI) is still increasing and I have now earned the Iron Ears Award. Next stop is the Bronze Ears Award, for which I need to acquire a SPI of 3000. The frequency spectrum shows my current weak spots in detecting boosted and attenuated frequencies. I find it interesting that there are differences between the two spectra.

I have been mixing Caroline in the Pines from Pretty Saro to determine how mixing on my Yamaha HS5/HS8 compares to mixing on my Sennheiser HD650 headphones (using Waves Nx Ocean Way Nahsville). Results of the mix are found [here].
Here you see the head tracking with the Waves plugin in action:
I am also making some progress with my new song (which still hasn’t a name). The next step is to add lyrics and vocals. Hopefully within the next two weeks. I am also considering to have the bass played by a real bass player. The current bass line is what I have composed in Steinberg Dorico and then transferred as midi to Cubase. Guitar solo is played by Bas van Kampen. I am playing my Fender Rhodes and the Hammond XK5.

In case you wondered why we have 12 tones in a scale.
