Let’s Talk About Encanto (Monday, 1 April 2024)

I recently became member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) which provides many benefits. One of them are the AES Live Videos. These videos deliver rich, quality content from the leading thinkers and practitioners in audio. The currently 618 videos are divided over 32 topical categories including Recording and Production, Live Sound, Immersive and Spatial Audio, Game Audio and XR, Acoustics and Psychoacoustics, Archiving and Restoration, Audio for Cinema and Theater, and Audio Networking.

Today I watched Let’s Talk About Encanto: Revealing the Secrets Behind Encanto’s Music and Mix, which takes a deep dive with the award-winning music team of Disney’s hit animated film.

Encanto tells the tale of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family who live in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. Each child has been blessed with a magic gift unique to them—each child, that is, except Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But after the family’s home is threatened, Mirabel may be their only hope.

Set to an incredible score, and eight original songs, Encanto comes to life, drawing from traditional Colombian instrumentation making anyone who hears it want to definitely “talk about Bruno.” Encanto won Best Score Soundtrack and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” won Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2023 Grammys. The film itself nabbed the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature in 2022. But how did the music all come together? Composer Germaine Franco, producer Mike Elizondo, and sound engineer David Boucher break it down in this exciting AES training and development webinar.
