Final Assignment (Saterday, 24 September, 2022)
The last four months I have been working on my final assignment for Sound Education Nederland (SEN): to Produce a song. In this assignment many things we learned came together including recording, mixing, mastering, and music production. The first step was to pick a song for this assignment, which eventually led me to The Stranger. This song was composed by Daphne Reijnoudt who also wrote the lyrics. I knew her from the past when we played together in a cover band.
She recorded The Stranger with piano/vocal only and published on SoundCloud. I liked the song and felt that the recording could be improved and that a more full arrangement would make it even better. Daphne was interested, so we spend quite some time on this production before getting the final result. The gory details can be found [here]. The lead vocal and piano were recorded in my home studio.
Looking back at the result, I am quite satisfied. Not only with the arrangement and overall quality of the song, but also compared to mixes and masters I made the past few years. I clearly advanced to a next stage thanks to SEN. At the same time there is still much too learn. The mix feedback from Hans Weekhout (Jellywood) helped me to make a big improvement to the mix. And, comparing my master with the master made by Hans, it is clear that there are steps to be taken by me.
Anyway, judge the final result yourself; in the meanwhile I will take on my next project.
