VU meters for beginners (Friday, 23 July, 2021)
You probably are familiar with VU meters. They used to be on audio devices you may have owned (or still own) in the past like amplifiers or tape recorders. You probably never have given this much thought nor were they in most situations at home of much use. But it is nice to see a needle fiddling around.
In modern digital audio workstations like Cubase these VU meters have been replaced with peak meters that show volume peak levels instead of average volume levels like provided by the VU meters. Many rely on these peak meters while mixing but there are advantages using one of more VU meters as they more reflect volume as humans perceive volume and they help in maintaining proper gain levels.
I just wrote a new post explaining few basics of VU meters and did some tests in Cubase to compare them to a peak meter. Hope this helps to get a better understanding of the meters on your device. You can find the post [here].
