Audient Nero Monitor Controller
To control volume listening levels, I use the Audient Nero. Previously, I used the Mackie BIG Knob but this controller is less precise in matching the left and right channel of the stereo signal. Nero perfectly matches the volume of the left and right channels using Audient’s custom Precision Matched Attenuation Technology. This prevents any deviation in volume between your left and right monitors or unbalancing of the stereo image.
Reference your mixes on up to three sets of speakers, independently set and match volume for all speakers and audition and assign your sub to any monitor path. Nero also provides one dedicated monitor grade headphone amp and three foldback grade headphone amps. I only use one input source (mix bus 1 and 2 from the X32), two pairs of monitors (Kalin IN-8 and Avantone Mixcubes), and my sub-woofer (Yamaha HS8). The mono function is very convenient during mixing to check for any mixing issues. The sub woofer is easily assigned to activate when switching to a monitor path of choice but maintain the ability to switch it on and off without losing your saved preset. Nero also lets you audition the sub on any alternative set of speakers without forcing you to assign it permanently.
Smart Touchpoints enables the customization of my workflow on the fly by easily routing and configuring the outputs and monitor controls to create different monitoring combinations.
Mid-Sides Monitoring
With the Nero you can listen to the Mid (=Mono) channel and the audio content that is only on the Side channels (= L-R), i.e., the part that cancels out when summing. This will highlight any stereo material such as reverbs & delays but they will be presented in mono (i.e., from both speakers equally).
Metering
The Nero metering ranges from -18 to +18dBu. 0 dBu = 0.775 volts. The value was chosen to avoid confusion with the dBm standard. So for a 600 ohm load, both dBm and the dBu decibel, will have the same values. Note that +4dBu corresponds to pro-level audio, which corresponds to 0Vu and -18dBFS.
