Recording
This song was recorded at Trypoul Recording Studios (Neerkant, the Netherlands’; www.trypoul.nl) by Hendrikus Nijhof, Jeroen Wolff, Antoine van Kampen, and Dirk Joosten (studio ownder). See also [here].
Mixing and Mastering
Mixing and mastering (loudness normalization and meta-data) was done in Cubase Pro 11 and WaveLab Pro 11 by Antoine van Kampen using plugins from mainly Waves, SoundToys, SSL, Valhalla, and Fabfilter. For mastering, I used, the bx_digital V3 M/S EQ (Brainworkx), Unisum compressor (Tone Projects), TDR Limiter 6 GE (Tokyo Dawn Records), Ozone (iZotope), Lin Dither (Steinberg), and other plugins.

Mixing challenges and evaluation
A selection of mixing challenges.
Overall
The arrangement and performance of the song are rather straightforward and not much exiting is happening during the song. The performance as such doesn’t invite to listen to it multiple times. I tried to make it little bit more interesting by adding a rhythmic delay on the guitar during the intro and bridge, and added a delay on the vocals during the intro, bridge, and outro. But in the end, there is only so much that you can do during the mixing stage to improve the impact.
Vocals
- The vocals (raw recording) sound a little bit harsh now and then. I think this is due to the microphone choice used for recording, and this posed a challenge during the mixing. In addition, the vocals are extremely dynamics and, therefore, did quite some manual editing (gain) on the track before any compression was applied. In addition, I did some minor pitch corrections and increased the length of a few words.
- In the final mix I did some parallel compression on the vocal and also used the Waves doubler in parallel on the vocals. This, together with reverb from the Valhalla Vintage Verb made the final vocal (I tried many different reverbs and settings but in the end the Vintage Verb did the job). I am quite pleased with the results.
