Becoming a producer by becoming a good musician (Wednesday, 23 February 2022)
Today another lesson from Sound Education Nederland from Bob van der Boom (Pro-Music Training). To become a good music producer we must not only know about recording, mixing, and mastering, but it is very important to have a good base in music theory. This involves familiarity with (major and minor) scales, intervals, (complex) chords, etc.
Long time ago, at the age of nine, my musical career started with three years of music theory. Subsequently, I started at the Tilburg School of Arts with organ, and at a later stage piano and synthesizer. Thereafter, I played in a range of bands. And more recently, I started to write my own songs. All of this gave me good knowledge of music and music theory and, therefore, hopefully a good base for music production.
The lesson went from very basic to more complex concepts. Having in mind that not all students have knowledge about music theory this probably has been a challenge for some in the group. Despite my background, there was a lot of (basic) stuff that I probably should have known by know but didn’t. For example, although I am familiar with (alternative)(sub)dominants, tonic, up/down beat, I was not so much aware of specific relations between them (see image in gallery).
