First Fiverr Cubase training (Saterday, 23 December 2023)

This week I was booked for the first time via Fiverr to provide Cubase support.

Fiverr is an Israeli multinational online marketplace for freelance services. Fiverr’s platform connects freelancers (sellers) to people or businesses looking to hire (buyers), encouraging a wide range of services in a free market. Fiverr takes its name from the $5 asking price attached to all tasks when the company was founded in 2010 in Tel Aviv, though many sellers now charge more.

The customer had bought a Cubase template for a Native Instruments orchestral library.  Templates can be a good starting point for new projects. Templates are projects where you can save all settings that you regularly use, such as bus configurations, sample rates, record formats, basic track layouts, VSTi setups, drum map setups, etc. My experience with orchestral templates (e.g., for BBCSO) is that these can be very overwhelming because of the many tracks and mixer channels (and VST expression maps) that are pre-defined. This was also the case for the NI template. This template contained a large number of VSTi instrument and MIDI tracks. a mixture of Group channels (mix busses) and VCA tracks. The VCA tracks controlled the levels of the different microphone positions that came with the library. What made it confusing, however, was the appearance of mixer channels that did not appear as tracks in the project window. These mixer channels we assigned to the different microphone positions (e.g., room, decatree, close) but these microphones were defined as different outputs in the contact player. Consequently, each VSTi instrument track in the project window (e.g., violin) corresponded to one NI Kontakt player in which the instrument (violin) was loaded. Within Kontakt the multiple microphone positions available and assigned to different Kontakt outputs, which then appeared in the Cubase mixconsole.

Once I explained this, and also showed some tricks to easily determine the routing within the template the customer was on his way to make music again.

Image. Symphony Series String Ensemble library with four microphone positions. I have defined two stereo outputs (st.1 and st.2) to which I can route any of these four microphones. St.1 and St.2 (which can be renamed) then appear in the Cubase mix console as separate channels.
