Mixing session with Wessel Oltheten (Wednesday, 15 December , 2021)
This evening the students of Sound Education Nederland were provided with an online mixing session by Wessel Oltheten.
Wessel Oltheten works as a mix and mastering engineer in his own Spoor 14 studio.
He also teaches music production and audio engineering at the Utrecht University of the Arts (and at Sound Education Nederland), and is the author of Mixing with Impact, a book on mixing that’s available in a Dutch and English edition and provides a unique approach (less technical) towards mixing. He has mixed and mastered music by Tim Knol, Tangarine, Henny Vrienten, Simply Red, and many more. Wessel has recorded e.g. the cinematic registration of Wagner’s Ring Des Nibelungen performed by the Nationale Reisopera, two albums by rock violinist David Garrett, and a single by Michael Jackson & Akon.
The session with Wessel was interesting. He approaches the mix without becoming too technical about the use of plugins, DAWs, etc. Instead, it much more focussed on attracing attention to the important parts of the mix, the create a mix with impact that listeners will play not only once, the position of the different aspects (instruments) in the mix, and the transition between different parts. But also to approach it from the musical aspects in terms of composition and arrangement, rhythm, etc. Many things to consider. This is, in part, nicely described in his book. He is working on a next book that will contain complementary insights and examples. The difficult part will be to put it in practice with the software and/or hardware we use for mixing.
One piece of music mastered by Wessel is Lullaby. He explained that he did some work on the transition from the music box to the piano, which was less perfect in the original mix.
Thanks, Wessel.
