Mixing by night….making progress on Fresh Start.
Saterday, 7 March 2020
This week worked hard on the new song, now called ‘Fresh Start’. I changed the chord progression a little bit but also decided to compose a bass line inspired by Rio of Duran Duran. Also slowed down the song and have taken an initial drum groove from BFD3. Here it is:
I also promised to come back to my new work flow for recording and monitoring using Cubase 10.5 Pro and the Behringer X32 mixer. You can find the gory details here. The basic setup is shown in the diagram below.

I am still working on Ever Mysterious but waiting for new vocal recordings. However, in the mean while I have reorganized my Cubase project using some tips from Chris Selim of Mixdown Online. Very nice channel with many very useful Cubase and mixing tips.
There is also a very rough idea for a new song provided by our singer Aggie Hinskens:
Yes, it is very rough but we also came up with a draft chord progression. The idea is to end up with a groove like in Hungry Like the Wolf of Duran Duran. I intend to make the bass line in Dorico and the drums with BDF3.
I also upload some old photographs of my band Mixed-Up back in 1992. Here is one, me playing on the Bit 99 while recording the gig with an analog tape cassette.
I have done some room calibration with the ARC2.5 system of IK Multimedia. You can find the results here. This should help in mixing projects. Thus, I am looking forward to my next mixing project to see if the ARC2.5 systems helps me to improve my mixes. Impression of the room calibration with a MicroElectrical Mechanical System (MEMS) microphone in progress:
Finally, I have improved my workflow for (vocal) recording combining features of the Behringer X32 and Cubase. Later more about this.

I still am working on Ever Mysterious. The mix is getting better. RealGuitar is now replaced with a real guitar part play by Jos de Jong who also redid the guitar solo. I also added a horn section in there. I also added some background vocals in the last chorus using the new ‘Hollywood Backup Singers’ sample library from East West Quantum Leap that I purchased. Still need to get more acquainted with this library. We will see if it will end up in the final mix. The idea is to only improve all the background vocals and then finalize. Here is the latest version:

I decided to remix Ever Mysterious from scratch and added some strings and piano. I re-did the Hammond part. It sounds much better but there are also several defects to be fixed (balance, far too much reverb). Also need for another guitar part underlying the piano solo; currently played with a Virtual Instrument (RealGuitar). And what about the guitar solo? Does it require a different sound? The idea came up to add more horns (which I now only added to the last chorus). Anyway, work to do for the coming week. Here it is in its current state:
This week also the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-675 digital piano arrived! Sounds very good. Plays very good. Need to find time. Here it is in our living room.
