Reference tracks for mixing and mastering
In the table below you find reference tracks that can be used during mixing or mastering. I have used part of these tracks during mixing. There are also references to ‘questionable mixes’. Let me know if you agree. The table can be downloaded as an Excel file below. The audio files are available through Dropbox. If you have additional suggestions, then let me know in the comments below.
The duration, (true) peak levels, loudness values, and RMS were obtained from WaveLab. If have indicated true peak levels >0 in red and >=1.0 with a red background. Integrated loudness levels <=-14 LUFS are highlighted with a green background. The tempo was obtained from BPM Counter.
Currently, I use Metric AB plugin for switching between my mix and a reference track. However, I have also been using Reference 2 or simply add a reference audio file directly in Cubase and then use my hardware controller to switch between the mix and the reference track. In addition, plugins like Audiolens and Tonal Balance Control let you create custom frequency reference curves to compare you mix against.
