Master the score (Tuesday, 26 December 2023)
Recently, I enrolled in the course ‘Pillars of Composition’ from Master the Score. Master The Score delivers high level expertise for composition, orchestration, production, mixing and mastering, aimed equally at film, TV, game and trailer composers. Pillars of Composition provides fundamental training for composers.
Ryan Leach, with credits like Disney and Netflix, guides students through over 13 hours of high quality content. Students will get a deep understanding of the four pillars: Melody, Harmony, Accompaniment and Counterpoint. The course follows a spiral approach, with each turn Ryan expands on previous lessons. He uses Dorico (Steinberg) to explain different concepts, which is convenient since I also use this music notation program.
I have taken a course in music composition years ago at ‘Leren Componeren‘ (Dutch), but I wanted to refresh my memory and take a next step towards orchestral compositions. It will take me while to not only go through the offered material but also to apply this in practice in my own songs. But, I will do my best.
Some music containing orchestral components that I previously made are:
Not many realize that I composed Inglemar Nectar for the kick-off meeting of a EU project about 7 years ago. Inglemar Nectar is a reshuffling of Germinal Center, which is a very complex anatomical structure involved in the adaptive immune response and found the lymphoid tissue.
For these compositions, I made use of different (orchestral) libraries including East West, Native Instruments Kontakt Ultimate, and Spitfire Audio BBCSO.
I also have a range of books related to music composition that I use as references (not all of which are on my website). For example,
- Instrumentation and Orchestration
- Arranging for Strings
- Arranging for Horns
- Harmony through Melody
- Melody in Songwriting
- Counterpoint
- Berklee Contemporary Music Notation
I just have to find the time to read them in more detail.
